10 Things Not to Say to Someone with MS

I keep coming across these sayings like the one I just read:

1. But you look so good
2. Just pray harder
3. You are so lucky to lay in bed all day
4. If you just got out of the house
5. It’s all in your head
6. No pain, no gain
7. Your illness is caused by stress
8. You just want attention
9. Stop being lazy and get a job
10. You can’t be in that much pain

As I have mentioned in earlier posts I feel very blessed to only have the few symptoms that I do have with MS. The above comments do not offend me. In fact, I say some of these things to myself. I still have a hard time convincing myself some days that the fatigue isn’t just in my head or that I am just being lazy. I start to feel sorry for myself because of my leg spasms and then I think of those that are in so much more pain than myself. How can I be offended by someone else when I have thought these things myself? We are asking for tolerance and understanding from our friends, family, and coworkers. Shouldn’t they expect the same from us? They don’t know how we feel so they cannot understand. They have not been educated on MS symptoms as much as we have been.

I am a very independent person. I consider it a good day when those around me forget I have multiple sclerosis and treat me just like everyone else. I want to be normal! I thank God everyday that my symptoms are such that I can walk, talk, work, and be normal. Others are not as fortunate. I will pray more for them.

  1. You could add “my friend cured their ms with diet” I hear that one a lot with the last time being only a few days ago! I have had 19 years of hearing dumb things about ms, now I have epilepsy I hear new dumb things about that. 😀

  2. I can’t believe I left that one out! It might be that it hits a little too close to home since my diet is far from stellar. I’m sorry to hear about the epilepsy. Do your doctors feel it was brought on by the MS medications? Thank you for reading my blog.
